Flags at City of Pickering facilities are flying at half-mast after a member of the Durham Regional Police Service passed away on August 12, 2026.
The city announced the gesture in recognition of the officer's death, saying it joins DRPS and the broader Durham community in mourning the loss.
No identifying details about the member have been released. The City of Pickering said in a news release that the decision was made out of respect for the wishes and privacy of the member's family, and that no further information would be shared at this time.
In its statement, the city acknowledged the work of police officers who serve each day to protect communities, support those in need and help keep residents safe.
"Their service carries tremendous responsibility and has a lasting impact on the people and communities they serve," the City of Pickering said in the news release.
The city extended condolences to the member's family, loved ones, friends and colleagues, and said it stands with all members of DRPS as they grieve the loss of a valued colleague, public servant and member of their policing family.
The half-mast order applies to flags at City of Pickering facilities. There was no indication in the release of how long the flags would remain lowered.
Durham Regional Police Service polices Pickering and other municipalities across Durham Region, including Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa.
