Pedestrians who walk along Liverpool Road will face rotating sidewalk closures for about three months starting next week, as the City of Pickering undertakes road improvements on the busy corridor.
The closures will affect both the east and west sides of Liverpool Road between Pickering Parkway and Bayly Street, running from Monday, October 19, 2026 until Monday, January 25, 2027, according to a City of Pickering notice.
The city says one side of the sidewalk will stay open to the public at all times while the work is underway. Because the open side will shift as construction progresses, closure and detour signage will be updated daily to show walkers which side of the street is available.
What pedestrians should expect
The affected stretch connects two well-travelled routes in Pickering, with Pickering Parkway at the north end and Bayly Street at the south. Anyone walking through the area — including commuters heading to nearby transit stops, shoppers and residents — should expect to cross the road and follow posted detour routes during the project.
Since only one side of the sidewalk will be available at any given time, and that side will change as the work moves along, the city is advising pedestrians to check the signs each day rather than counting on a fixed detour pattern.
Where to find details and who to contact
A service announcement with a map showing the affected area has been published on pickering.ca as part of the notice.
Residents with questions about the closures can contact the city's Engineering Services Department. Michael Manion, an inspector with Development Services, can be reached at 905-420-4660, ext. 2124, or by email at mmanion@pickering.ca. Joe Mitschang, a supervisor with Development Services, can be reached at the same main number at ext. 2030 or at jmitschang@pickering.ca.
The work is expected to wrap up by January 25, 2027, weather and scheduling permitting.
